Interviewing people on the street

Isaac interviewing a wheelbarrow boy
We found out that the wheelbarrow boys leave school at Std 7 because their parents can't afford to send them to school any longer.  They say that their parents have no education, that's why they couldn't get good jobs to earn money to pay for their children's education, and now they don't have the education to get good jobs, so the cycle will continue.  One boy said that on a good day he earns TSH3000, which is about US$2.50.  From that money, he has to pay his room rent, buy food, save up to get married one day and send money to his family who are very poor and live far away!

2011 Exhibition under way!

P6 students from the International School Moshi are very busy researching their different areas of interest.  This year's exhibition is called IMPACT THE WORLD.  There are three groups of students, each group has their own central idea, but each group member has their own lines of inquiry.  The exhibition unit falls under the theme How we express ourselves.  We started the exhibition process the beginning of December, meeting once a week for an hour.  Students completed many different activities to reinforce their understanding of the PYP, and by the time the 21st March arrived, they had their central idea, lines of inquiry and guiding questions developed from the key concepts.  Students kept Thought Journals over the December holiday, to help them discover what interests them most.  As we are looking into how we express ourselves, students were asked what they felt so strongly about, they wanted to shout it out to the world in whatever means possible.  The groups that formed were natural groups based on their area of interest.  We have Shawn, Sammy and Imran concerned about problems caused by a lack of education, and the connection between education and poor nutrition; then we have the group interested in children's rights - Isaac is concerned about child labour, Sanne about child soldiers, Alex how racism affects children and Nathalie is focusing on children's basic needs; then we have the animal group - Nandi is concerned about the effects of poaching, Ruqaiya about sea turtles, Mercedes is interested in whaling, Mwoleka is worried about cheetahs and Sara is worried about how tourism is impacting the dolphin population.
Our three central ideas are:
Humans' choices affect living animals.
Lack of education around the world affects the quality of people's lives.
Children around the world have a right to live a healthy childhood.
The students worked on and developed these central ideas themselves.

Last week leading up to the exhibition!

P6's at International School Moshi have been working hard on their Exhibition for 2010.  After much debate, they have chosen to call their exhibition PEOPLE POWER with an exhibition Central Idea of People work together to make the world a better place.  This year the exhibition falls under the Transdisciplinary Theme of 'How we express ourselves.'  Students were asked to think about what issue they felt so strongly about, that they wanted to shout it out to the world.  Over the December break, they kept a Thought Journal to record their thoughts and this helped them to identify the issue they felt strongest about.  Based on the issue they identified, each student came up with their own central idea, which is connected to the exhibition central idea.

The past five weeks have been busy ones as students followed the process to conduct their inquiries into the issues they identified.  As the P6 class is a class of only 11 students, the P5 class after working on a unit of inquiry on Persuasion, have come in for the final two weeks to work with the P6's as their Busy Worker Bees.  The P6 students had to give an oral presentation about what their exhibition was about, and the P5's then chose what issue they were interested in.

The P5 class are making brochures, flyers etc for the P6's and learning about the Exhibition Process, so they will be prepared for their Exhibition next year.

Here are some photos of the process we've gone through.
